Ask for the material by name

A photograph can establish a direction, but it cannot settle a material specification. Ask for the leather name, finish or collection reference, and the material intended for each upholstered section. A piece may combine a seat leather with a different back, border, or accent panel.

Treat a pattern name and a material description as separate questions. If you are drawn to crocodile-pattern detailing, ask whether the selection is embossed leather or genuine crocodile hide. Have the final material description confirmed before ordering.

Review a sample where the piece will live

Look at the proposed sample alongside the flooring, woodwork, stone, and textiles it will sit with. Review it in daylight and under the room’s evening lighting. A dark brown that reads warm beside one floor can create a different relationship beside another.

Ask what the sample represents and what variation should be expected in the finished selection. Keep the approved reference with the order; a screen image alone should not define an exact color match.

Let daily use inform the selection

Tell the team about pets, children, entertaining, direct sunlight, and how often the piece will be used. Ask which available finishes suit those conditions and request care instructions for the exact material under consideration.

Comfort needs its own conversation. Discuss seat depth, back support, cushion feel, arm height, and how you prefer to sit. A striking leather choice cannot answer those questions for you. Before a showroom visit, confirm which pieces and samples are available to review.

Decide where the detail belongs

For a restrained room, start with a consistent leather and let the silhouette or wood finish carry the character. For a more expressive piece, decide which surface should hold the pattern or hide accent. The visible back of a freestanding chair may deserve as much attention as its front.

Bring the selection back to the room as a whole. Repeating a tone, texture, or finish across a small number of elements can create a coherent composition without making every piece identical. Include the final placement of accent materials in the specification.
